Offshore wind is growing fast. The Netherlands is leading the way, pledging 21 GW of offshore wind by the end of this decade. That’s 75 per cent of the current national electricity consumption.
Energy from North Sea wind farms will play a key role. Operators are advancing plans for next generation offshore grid systems supported by supersized 2-GW converter stations. Massive units that require our unique transport and installation capacity!
At the same time, oil & gas companies are faced with the challenge of decommissioning and removing their old installations. This is a highly complex operation. In the North Sea alone, around 470 installations will require decommissioning over the next 30 to 40 years.
Our record-breaking heavy lift vessel Pioneering Spirit, capable of lifting entire topsides and jackets, reduces the amount of offshore work associated with platform installation and decommissioning.
Pioneering Spirit proved herself in 2016 with the removal of the Yme platform followed by the iconic Shell Brent platforms. She showcased her wind capabilities in September 2022, installing the entire 900-MW Kappa converter station for the DolWin6 offshore grid connection system in days. In the wake of the DolWin success, Pioneering Spirit is set to install a considerable number of converter stations in the coming years.
