Together on a mission to clean our rivers and oceans
Plastic is an important enabler of modern day life, but it comes with a great responsibility: waste management. A recent study estimates that by 2030, global plastic production will reach 600 million tonnes, of which a large part will end up in the environment if we do not act, which causes a serious threat to the environment. Every year, hundreds of million tonnes of waste are mismanaged on a global scale and 5 to 13 million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in our oceans. Most of the land based pollution will find its way to a river, carrying it to the seas, where it is very hard to recover. Working every day at sea, Allseas witnesses first-hand the devastating impact plastic pollution is having on the world’s oceans and marine life. Plastic pollution is a global problem, and we are committed to the effort to clean our oceans by developing systems to collect waste in rivers and waterways before it flows out to seas.
Allseas’ river plastics removal activities are receiving financial support from the European Commission’s LIFE programme.
Development and installation of plastic collection systems
Allseas has set up a riverine plastic recovery project, during which two plastic waste collection systems have already been installed: Patje Plastic in the Port of Antwerp, Belgium, and Catchy in the Nieuwe Maas river in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. These systems are installed at so called “hotspots” and use wind and currents to collect plastic. Our systems are capable of capturing micro- and macro plastics at the water surface and in the upper part of the water column. Catchy has set the standards for our future systems. The third system, called Catchy 2, is installed beneath the Erasmusbrug in Rotterdam. The latest system, Catchy Mini in the marina of Terschelling, is in the installation, test and optimisation phase.
