In the Netherlands, Allseas is working with Port of Rotterdam to develop a plastic catcher for the Nieuwe Maas flowing through the city centre. The goal of this project is to design and test a passive system to remove macro plastics (> 5 mm) at the surface and in the water column. The challenge is to cope with strong currents, as well as the change in current direction and the water level variations due to tidal effects. The system is currently in the design phase.
Our efforts have received EU financial backing in the form of a grant under the LIFE programme, the EU’s funding instrument for environmental and climate action. Over the next three years, our “LIFE SouPLess” project aims to support existing waste management processes, and develop and deploy state-of-the-art plastic identification and recovery tools in support of the EU Water Framework Directive.
