Assistant R&D Engineer (River Plastics Removal Project)

Allseas Group, founded in 1985 and headed by Edward Heerema, is a world-leading contractor in offshore pipeline installation, heavy lift and subsea construction. Dynamism, inventiveness, rapid progress and a no-nonsense attitude are the hallmark of Allseas. For over 30 years, we have been developing cutting-edge technology and pushing the boundaries to deliver state-of-the-art solutions to meet the market’s ever-changing needs.

Respect for the environment and conducting our operations in a responsible and sustainable manner is one of Allseas’ core principles. Working every day at sea, we are increasingly concerned about the future of our oceans. So we are taking an active stance, using our engineering expertise and bold thinking to support the global effort to rid our oceans of plastic.

Our goal is simple: stop plastic waste from entering the oceans by removing it from as close to the source as possible. Within our Innovations Department, a team of dedicated engineers is leading the way, developing a system to catch plastic in rivers and waterways before it can spread to the oceans and break up.

To gain more insight into the levels and locations of plastic waste in our rivers, we are running a plastic sampling campaign in the Nieuwe Maas, a distributary of the Rhine, one of Europe’s longest and most important waterways. We have built a special workboat to catch all sizes of plastic waste at different waters depths, which we then analyse back in the laboratory.
