Mario MendesAssistant Project Manager
This is my eighth year at Allseas, where I’ve always been involved in heavy lift projects. The company gives you the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment with brilliant people and face a great variety of technical challenges, which demand different solutions and expand the limits of technology.
I graduated in my hometown in 2006 with a Master in Civil Engineering at Lisbon Technical University. I have always had a deep desire for adventure and to explore the world. I started working in Spain in Construction Management right after I completed my studies, but in 2010 decided to take a break to travel around the world and ended up my sabbatical year in the Netherlands, freshly arrived from India. I was eager to start working again and was looking forward for an exciting and fulfilling job.
My first contact with Allseas was at its stand in the Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference in 2011. It was love at first sight. I was so impressed with Allseas innovative attitude, the offshore industry and of course, the potential of Pioneering Spirit that I knew there and then Allseas would be part of my life. I started as a Heavy Lift Engineer when the Heavy Lift Department was being set up. By then, first steel cutting for Pioneering Spirit was about to start at Daewoo shipyard in South Korea.
During my first years, I participated in many FEED studies and tenders, initially as Heavy Lift Engineer and later as Lead Engineer. I had the privilege to witness the construction of this amazing ship to which our work in the Heavy Lift Department also contributed to its development. We had many external interfaces with clients and very challenging and exciting tasks. I never had a boring day in Allseas.
Eventually, all the hard work paid off and we were awarded our first commercial heavy lift project in 2014 – the Yme MOPU removal for which I started as Lead Engineer. During this project, I was given the opportunity to move to Project Management, where I work as Assistant Project Manager. In my role, I get to travel a lot, work on board Pioneering Spirit and other vessels, and I spend my fair share of time on offshore platforms and at disposal yards. I’ve also had the honour of witnessing the technological miracle of topsides single lift. The rest is history…
